Day 31
January 31, 2021
One month down.
Goats are with babies. Looked back at photos from 2020, first babies didn't appear until May. How long is gustation period of a goat? 6 months?
One alone bluebird sitting on the eave. Actually I saw a cardinal in my driveway. A Nor'eastern is due tomorrow, birds were out eating a lot today.
We've had freezing temperatures for over 3 days. The Green River was frozen in places and rushing in others. During the winter it winds all over the island like mounds and the springs from the higher ground flow rapidly down the one side of the road and keeps the river running allowing only some places to freeze over.
These two were hanging out at Just Roots. I think there were over 150 starlings in the trees right next to them. The hawks flew away, but the starlings did circles between the pig pens and water trough and high trees. Around and around they went. The hawks watched for a while, but then they went to the other side of the fields.
I was appointed to the Board of The Lava Center this month. Our first meeting was today. It was also my first Zoom meeting. It's going to take me some time to figure out the etiquette of zoom. I am honored to sit on this Board and be a part of the building of an arts center, but I also am a little tentative. I haven't worked on anything professional outside my own artwork in almost 9 years at this point and I'm a little wary. But I am also excited by the idea of working on some projects I really believe in. Wish me luck.
The ice flows are such a reminder of the frigid weather. So many hawks around this year. Here in Wendell we have many hawks and less bird sightings. Your sharing your thoughts, pictures and life experiences gives me pause to be more observant. Good luck on your board and the zoom meetings become easy to maneuver, I just miss being in person!!!
