Day 56
February 25. 2021
A visit with Ember and Karen

I actually got going pretty early this morning.  It was a gorgeous day to go for a little visit,

Karen and Ember's house is sunny and inviting and I have to say it was cheery to be there.  They've set up some bird environments per se with different types of food to attract different birds.  So you sit in the dining room and you watch the birds.  Really nice.

After doing a little paper work they took me to the Vermont Nature Center in Woodstock where they rehab birds and they take care of birds who can never fly again.  The cool thing about being close to birds is being to see individual feathers and how intricate they are.  Up close the colors are very different and vibrant.  A lot of these birds had lived her for 20 years or more and in good shape.

This female bald eagle is making a nest with her guy friend supervision.

There was a pair of Golden Eagles

and the feathers on the Horned Owl were fascinating

Karen is looking at songbirds. There were Bohemian Waxwings and lots of goldfinch, a cardinal pair, cedar waxwing, and a house finch.  There was also a large enclosure with a pair of blue jays in it who were very noisy and bright blue.  I think they may have been ready for release.

Many of the birds had been hit by cars.  One kestrel had only one eye.  She had two pals living with her  They seemed quite interested in watching us.  The Coopers Hawk is much smaller than the red tailed and his tail is longer.

There are other exhibits at the Center that weren't open and there is a canopy walk that you can take in the later months to watch birds in the wild.

My ride home was lovely.  The moon was already rising and the sun was setting.

This is Putney

and this is home again.
Thanks Karen and Ember for a very sweet day.
