When I took the photo of Clarkdale Fruit Farm late this fall I did not have the Wolf Kahn painting in mind at all. As a Marlboro College alumna I am certainly aware of his work, and I love it. This is a postcard I had from a collection that I used to let EJ play with. In the car they had stickers and this book of postcards. They would add figures to Wolf Kahn landscapes. They'd put fish in the water and birds in the trees. I loved them. I found this one in a photo pile somewhere and it struck me how close I got with my picture this fall. It's pretty cool what inspires one's work.
Ate my lunch in the graveyard today. The storm had already begun and in spite of the lack of light, I was searching for birds. I was hoping for some spots of red or blue, but what I got was grey on grey.
I have to tell you I am very cozy in my house tonight. Not sure why. I cooked a taco casserole for dinner which was tasty. I watched a little TV. I talked to a good friend for awhile. And I have spent some time thinking about the stories I'd like to tell.
There must be snowstorm stories to tell. The winter of 71-72 I lived in a house right off Compo Beach in Westport. It wasn't winterized, but they rented out as though it was. It was really cold in there. We moved out in February of 72. We couldn't stand it and my family was moving back into my father's childhood home, so my friend Bob and I moved back there too.
Out in front of the beach house was a little lawn on a cove and there were swan and ducks and gulls. The swans used to try to bite Annie's feet. It was a really sweet little beach house it just didn't have any heat in it. It had a built in heater in one wall in the so called living room which we housed an electric train set and motorcar race track. We could group together at the bottom of the stairwell in front of the heater or we could get under tons of blankets. I think we did well to last to February. By that time I think it was only Bob and I left out of 6 or 7 of us in September. Little did I know what was to come next, but I think I kind of loved living in that little house.
It really is snowing. I hear NYC has already gotten over 18 inches. I don't know how many we have, but it's not supposed to stop until 11 tomorrow morning.
Looks very Americana to me.

I hope the sun comes out for a couple hours though. OK, I'm going to try a jigsaw puzzle now.
I bet that jigsaw puzzle is finished!
