I

Groundhog did not see his shadow, got to hang out for a while in the snow, which is a good thing.
I've been thinking a lot more about stories I've also been thinking a lot more about snow. I remember snow being a constant when we were kids in Connecticut. I think I've written a lot about sledding behind Liz's house. I would pile all of my stuffed animals onto a toboggan and go flying down the big hill and then have to walk up in my snow pants and boots collecting all of the animals along the way. I'm sure I didn't do it too often in a given day, I'd give up, but then do it again after the next storm.
Playing Duck Duck Goose in the front lawn at Chestnut hill, and then off to Vershire, Vt. at 17 where snow got really deep. The girls dorm and main classroom building was one in the same and it was so drafty. I would wake up in the morning and there would be snow inside my dorm room. Snow, lots of stories about snow.
Today I went out in it. I can't shovel, but my old landlord plowed me out in the middle of the night and my next door neighbor snow-blowed what was left. I felt so taken care of. Gentlemen, they are. Thank you, guys.
Stuck In Snow
The snow was thick,
high above my calves
I could have drowned by
hidden
moonlight.
Smell of pine penetrated
the snowy night. Alone I
walked through the woods,
decided not to take the path,
try the direct route through
tall evergreen trees.
Silence covered the harsh wind.
Unable to pull my boots
high enough out of the drift,
I lay down in the cold.
Rolled until I reached the road.
This too was steeped in snow,
but a plow had ventured by
not long before. I could
stand again. I could hear
the heavy white blanket
lie down on gentle woods.
Again, no cardinals, but red in the fairgrounds and red on the bushes.
