Day 207
July 26, 2022
a continuing saga
The Saga of a Rookery
March until July heron
commune in sieges high
in the dead tree tops above
still waters, frog lands.
Build stick nests, lay large eggs.
Mom and Dad sit tending them
until furry chicks turn to
prehistoric bird kin.
Adults stand guard for all nests
screeching when eagles
approach, mother heron’s beak
a saber so strong.
This summer eagle won. Sadly
massacred the chattering
feathered dinosaur young ones.
Adults scattered once more.
Bullfrog now in abundance
dragonflies less secure
Three herons teach aloneness
like soldiers below those nests.
This is the saga of a
rookery during summertime.
Community birds half the time
teachers of patience the rest.
